Habitat: (Kim in Las Animas Co.) Comanche National Grassland: Whitby Canyon. Between points at 37.09172°N, 102.98788°W (±24 ft), 37.09755°N, 102.99336 (±22 ft), and 37.09864°N, 102.99082°W (±21 ft; all determined by GPS; datum = WGS 84). Moderate to steep, primarily S and W-facing slopes above unnamed tributary to Carrizo Creek with extensive areas of surfacing bedrock, low outcrops, and boulders of non-calcareous sandstones of Lower Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone and Purgatoire Formation and sandstone cliffs of narrow canyon along creek. Vegetation comprising a complex of grazed, shortgrass (Bouteloua gracilis, Buchloë dactyloides) prairie and Juniperus monosperma-Pinus edulis woodland on ridges and slopes, with scattered Cylindropuntia imbricata, Quercus ×undulata, Rhus trilobata and Yucca glauca, and more mesic woodlands in canyon and near spring, with Celtis reticulata, Juniperus scopulorum, Populus deltoides, and Quercus ×undulata. Soil sandy.
Notes: Common on slopes. Small trees to 5 m high.
