Dry, silty substrate.
Bunchgrass, roots fleshy to fibrous, dead material gathered at base; leaf blades 1-2mm wide; seedhead begins with 3 purple awns, parallel to spike, matures into tan awns 5-7cm long, perpendicular to spike, arranged at 120 deg. angles.
