Habitat: Open canyon with steep bounding slopes forested by Pinus edulis, P. ponderosa, Juniperus scopulorum in dry, rocky, granitic soil; common associates include Yucca glauca, Cercocarpus montanus, Rhus aromatica, Artemisia frigida, Heterotheca villosa, Clematis ligusticifolius; taprooted, branched from base; flowers yellow; very common.
Substrate: Quaternary terrace deposits derived from surrounding Precambrian granite hills and Tertiary intrusive volcanic rock
Associated Species: Pinus edulis; P. ponderosa; Juniperus scopulorum; Yucca glauca; Cercocarpus montanus; Rhus aromatica; Artemisia frigida; Heterotheca villosa; Clematis ligusticifolius
