Habitat: Locally common. Erect, rhizomatous, perennial herb; 2 m tall. Male and female spikelets separate. Community: disturbed eastern wet longleaf pine flatwood savannah. Topography: level. Substrate: clay loam. Associates: Pinus elliottii, Triadica sebifera, Magnolia virginiana, Hydrocotylle umbellata, Centaurium, Juncus spp.
