Locality: USA, New Mexico, Grant, Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, N 33 deg 27' 33'', W 111 deg 56' 35'', 1200 ft., 366 m: accession number 2003-0085-01-1; originally received as a plant collected by Raul Puente 2656 from New Mexico, Grant County, about 20 miles Southwest of Silver City; 4 miles Northeast of Junction with I-90 along FR 860 aka Gold Gulch Road; collector's notes: associated taxa-Juniperus deppeana, Pinus cembriodes, Rhus trilobata, Cylindropuntia spinosior, Opuntia phaeacantha, grasses, Dasylirion wheeleri; granite.

Description: Plant height 4.5 feet; stems gray-green with some maroon on areoles; spines white with golden tips; flowers collected late morning to mid-day, additional flowers collected later in April and early May 2012 and April 2013, diameter 33-50 mm, length 51-61 mm, outer perianth magenta with greenish-magenta mid-stripe, inner perianth magenta with yellow-green at base; stigma lobe number 7-8, cream; style magenta with white at base; filaments magenta; fruits dry, brown, diameter 15 mm, length 27-28 mm, one sterile; seeds tan.
Reproductive Condition: Flowers and fruit.
