Hello! My name is Matthew Sheik and I'm the Associate Botanist for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources! This species is not Equisetum laevigatum A. Braun, but instead mostly likely Equisetum praealtum Rafinesque. Here are the morphological indicators: 1. A majority of the leaf sheath scars occur in pairs. One at the base and one at the apex of the scars. in E. laevigatum, scars mainly occur just at the base of the sheath. 2. The spore producing cone is sharply tipped, unlike E. laevigatum where the spore producing cone is rounded. There is a third character, but it has to do with how scabrous the stems are, which I cannot tell. Best, - Matthew L.
