Sanded, varnished cross-section of what appears (due to the bark thickness and coloration) to be Pinus ponderosa. Specimen is bound by metal bands, and features labels indicating landmark historical events that took place during the life of the tree. Collecting location and date unknown. No known previous catalogue record. Anecdotal evidence (former Botany chief Michael Shchepanek) suggests it has been with the museum since at least 1965.
